While researching a way to BOOST the metabolism and taking charge of your health and metabolism I stumbled upon many different thoughts on Boosting the Metabolism and thought I’d also share what I discovered back in December 2016. It’s called TRIM.

Sex differences: Males generally have a 10 to 15% faster BMR than females because the male body has a larger percentage of lean muscle tissue.
Age: Younger people have faster metabolisms due to increased activity of cells.
Other components of your metabolism include physical activity, which accounts for about 20% of calories burned, and dietary thermogenesis, which is the number of calories required for digesting and processing the food you eat. This accounts for the remaining 10% of energy needs.

How Does This Affect My Weight? Simply put, your metabolism affects weight management because it determines how many calories you need per day. If you have a high BMR (fast metabolism) it takes a lot of calories for your body to function; eating calorie-laden foods may not pack on the pounds for you. On the other hand, if you have a low BMR (slow metabolism), your body needs fewer calories to function. Unfortunately, for your sluggish metabolism, eating calorie-laden foods will result in weight gain.
How Can I Jump Start my Body’s Metabolic Engine? Follow these tips to naturally boost your metabolism:
Eat Breakfast. Breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day, especially for you weight loss seekers. Research shows that those who eat breakfast lose more weight than those who skip breakfast. Your metabolism slows down while you sleep and it doesn’t speed back up until you eat again. If you don’t eat until lunchtime, your body won’t burn as many calories as it could during the morning period. Kick start your day with a balanced breakfast. Eat smaller meals throughout the day. Eating five or six smaller meals rather than three large meals helps to keep your metabolism revved up! It also helps to fill you up over the course of the day, making a binge session less likely.
Don’t starve yourself. Fasting, cutting calories and skipping meals will all help put weight ON not OFF. Your body needs a certain number of calories to function. If you don’t meet this need, your body will switch into survival mode, slow down the metabolism and promote the storage of energy (calories) in the form of fat to protect itself from starvation.
Side note here: When consuming the TRIM you will not want to eat as much food or perhaps not want to eat at all….still, you must remember to eat as the KEEP your metabolism that you sped up with TRIM, in high gear. Exercise. Both cardiovascular exercise and weight training help to improve metabolic rate and keep weight off. Weight training also puts the metabolism into overdrive, so your burn calories for up to two hours after the workout.

Energy-dense carbohydrates, such as whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits that contain fiber to help regulate your metabolism by having less impact on insulin levels. High quality protein, such as fish, poultry, lean meats, soy, tofu and low fat dairy products to help build metabolism-boosting muscle mass. Here is a question that comes up on occasion from people using the TRIM. So what do we do? We ask a friend with a vast knowledge in the field of nutrition and supplementation what SHE thinks, and this is what our friend and colleague, Keli McBride shared with us.
Question: Why do I feel thirsty and ‘dehydrated’ when using the TRIM?
Answer: “Increasing your metabolism the way TRIM does it uses water up quickly to burn fat so you require more. With regard to metabolism, water helps the body to burn the calories it takes in through eating. With dehydration, your metabolism slows down. … A study showed that increased intake of water promotes body weight loss through decreased eating and fat loss via lipolysis.”

The Link Between Dehydration and Metabolism
When people are trying to lose weight and shred fat their main goal to long-term weight management should be to raise their metabolism (rate in which your body uses energy).
What most people fail to realize is that their hydration level directly affects their metabolism.
Water is involved with almost every biological function in the body, so therefore your body’s metabolism slows down in a dehydrated state. When your body does not have adequate amounts of water, your calorie burning machines (muscles) slow down dramatically. Over 70% of your muscle consists of water, so when they are not fully hydrated their ability to generate energy is severely inhibited.
Another important factor to understand is – your body’s ability to utilize fat as fuel is also restricted when you are in a dehydrated state. Combine these two factors and you have one slow metabolism!
The list of negative side effects to your metabolism due to dehydration is endless. The effect of dehydration is often overlooked, and in fact it should be one of the priorities of any healthy eating plan.
Taking in a sufficient amount of water, is the first step in assuring your metabolism is working at its optimal level.
Remember…your body can’t distinguish between hunger and thirst, so when your tummy is rumbling and you think it’s in need of food, it could just be telling you that it needs some water. Have a big glass of water first and if you are still hungry 15 minutes later then have something to eat. If you’re thinking my mouth gets dry when I’m thirsty, that’s how I can tell, then give this a thought…once your mouth gets dry and you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated…therefore your body and your metabolism is already in a sluggish dehydrated state!
I hope that makes you think twice about how much water you intake each day! I find that the best way to make sure you are getting at least 2 litres, is to fill up a 2 litre bottle first thing in the morning, and make sure it has gone by the time you go to bed. Just remember you will need more on the days you exercise and in the hot weather!” – end of research and quote.
Another rule of thumb….. drink 1/2 ounce of water for every pound you weigh. (see example to the left, also stated: Drink half your body weight in water!)
Example: If you weigh 150 pounds drink 75 ounces of water per day. If you are active and sweat a lot, drink more!

A couple of days ago this was me. I wanted to SMASH the bathroom scales. Why? The number on the scale was not changing! I began comparing my weight loss in pounds to others doing Ketopia. What a mistake!!! Don’t do it!!!! Everyone’s Ketopia journey is their own!
Then I took my measurements….and I got the REAL picture.

How to Drop the Body Fat
This morning I began reading an interesting book on metabolism titled Ultra-Metabolism, by Mark Hyman, MD. “We have evolved over hundreds of thousands of generations under conditions of food scarcity. The genes and molecules that control our eating behavior were shaped by those times. Our DNA(therefore) was designed for accumulating fat in the days when we had to forage for food in the wild.”I can’t seem to lose weight. Every time I diet, I put the weight back on. It doesn’t seem to matter what I eat, I still gain weight. Ever heard any of those lines? Our bodies were designed over time and out of necessity to gather and store fat. It’s what caused us to survive!Once you understand this fact, you will begin to look at your body from a different perspective. It’s not working against you, it’s surviving. The crazy part is, it doesn’t have to survive any more. We can make it thrive. We just need to work within its old programing to have the body we want.If you’ve read the other posts here on Nutrition you can see that this truly is a “Fat Loss” discussion and not simply a “Weight Loss” discussion. Weight loss is what you hear about on TV and from friends, in articles in magazines and their mantra is Lower Calories = Less Weight ! If that is or was true, how has it worked for you? Most of us have been on a diet before(most of us, me included, have been on 10-20 diets, cleanses’, etc. over the years!) So, how has that approach worked? For me, not so good. Out of high school in the mid 1970′s (yes, I’m 54… thought I’d save you time!) I weighed 160 lbs., after 4 years of college I was at 180 lbs. Over the next 30 years I found my “set point” to be 232 – 245 lbs.Excuses Why we Keep our Body FatOh, but I had excuses…. “I was working so much!” “We all get fatter as we get older.” “I’m big boned.” and our latest favoriate, “Winters are long here in Vermont!” …. yada, yada, yada….. See I had always operated from a Weight Loss mentality. The thought that I needed to take on LESS calories to weigh LESS. Seems to make sense UNTIL you take into account our DNA and how our bodies were trained over millions of years and have come to be.
The way to make your body THRIVE is to understand how to crank up your metabolism. Your body stores more fat if you eat less! (Back to survival) and 95% of all diets are about eating less. Our bodies know what to do with less……. it stores more fat and won’t give it up for anything!!!
Here’s the answer… you will have to eat more! Yep, I said it. Eat more. How much more? Here is a good rule of thumb.
Weight x 10 = RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate, which is how many calories you need to stay alive while you are sleeping) to that add 20% more for daily activities. So for me today 233 lbs. x 10 = 2330 calories + 466(20% of 233 lbs.)=2796 calories per day to maintain my current size without a workout. For me this was a huge number! I had been eating less than 1500 calories per day under the old idea that less calories = less weight! Well at nearly 2800 calories I started losing weight. More importantly, I started losing body fat! I lost 5% body fat in 5 weeks!
Some weeks I lost weight and other weeks I lost inches! I discovered a certain flow to my weight and fat loss…. It wasn’t a straight line, meaning it didn’t go down at a consistent 1-3 lbs. per week. So I found I needed to not only weigh myself regularly, but also to check body fat, try on my “tester” clothes, and take measurements. So, be flexible. Identify a success this today or this week! It may not be weight! The reality is, that the bathroom scale is likely not in your top 3 important ways to track your weight and fat loss. I find the top 3 to be

In fact, when I lost 5% body fat in those 5 weeks, it occurred to me that I didn’t care if I weighed 300 lbs, if I was lean, toned, cut, had high energy, etc. So identify and set real life goals and don’t get caught up in the images we all see in magazines & TV.
