Tavala Tackles Weight Gain in America.
So Why Weight Loss?
HERE ARE SOME EYEOPENING STATISTICS ABOUT ADULTS IN THE U.S. and why Tavala has chosen to create products that will be solutions to these problems…naturally.
Obesity rates exceeded 35 % in four states, 30 % in 25 states and are above 20 % in all states. In 1985, no state had an adult obesity rate higher than 15 %; in 1991, no state was over 20 %; in 2000, no state was over 25 %; and, in 2006, only Mississippi and West Virginia were above 31 %.
Nationally, nearly 38 % of adults are obese.
Nearly 8 % of adults are extremely obese (BMI greater than or equal to 40.0); Obesity rates are higher among women (40.4 %) compared to men (35.0 %). Women are also almost twice as likely (9.9 %) to be extremely obese compared to men (5.5 %).
In addition, rates are the highest among middle-aged adults (41 % for 40- to 59-year-olds), compared to 34.3 % of 20- to 39-year-olds and 38.5 % of adults ages 60 and older.
Approximately one in four young adults — ages 17 to 24 — are too overweight to join the military. Being overweight or obese is the leading medical reason why young adults cannot enlist. And, the military spends more than $1.5 billion on healthcare costs and on recruiting replacements for those who are too unfit to serve.
What breaks my heart is today more than 1 out of 3 teens are overweight or obese, and many are children.
DIABETES THE NEXT EPIDEMIC?
Nationwide, diabetes rates have nearly doubled in the past 20 years — from 5.5 percent (1994) to 9.3 percent in 2012. More than 29 million American adults have diabetes and another 86 million have prediabetes.
The CDC projects that one-in-three adults could have diabetes by 2050. More than one-quarter of seniors (ages 65 and older) have diabetes (25.9 percent or 11 million seniors). Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for around $245 billion in medical costs and lost productivity each year.
HYPERTENSION
One in three adults has high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke. Approximately 30 percent of hypertension cases may be attributable to obesity, and the gure may be as high as 60 percent in men under age 45. People who are overweight are more likely to have high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats and high LDL (bad cholesterol), which are all risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
