Be an Inspiration to Others- Follow Your Dreams

Today I stumbled upon the story below of Ernestine Shepherd and her quest to be in the Guinness World of Records as the oldest female body builder, and I thought about MY dreams over my lifetime. I am only days from turning 60 and realized if Ernestine can accomplish HER dreams at a ripe age of 80, then surely I can as well. It got me thinking!

Other than business goals there is only time I set a goal that I was 100% dedicated to was when I was turning 30 years old. (Other goals I may have given 90-98%, but never 100%. I was working at a local fitness center in sales and inspired by several people, with mediocre genetics, who joined the gym, began to eat a clean diet, train with free weights and then compete in a local Vermont body building competition.

I was in pretty decent shape when I turned 30 but dedicated myself to 12 weeks of FOCUSING on my goal….not for anyone else, but for ME. To prove to myself that I could still be athletic, competitive and in shape, after giving birth to a son and a daughter. I told few people because I didn’t want to hear anything negative or have me doubt what I was looking to accomplish. in fact, I didn’t even tell my parents who lived in the same community as I did.

When you are dedicated to a goal you can move mountains!

I stayed true to my goal, even though it wasn’t always easy and I proved to myself that I had the discipline needed to stick with it. I only wanted to compete one time and I was blessed to take first place in my weight category, which believe it or not, was Heavy Weight. (Imagine 122 lbs. being Heavy Weight? But that was way before female body building became popular among the masses and you didn’t have to have a lot of muscle, like you have to today!) I weighed in at 122 pounds and 8.5% body fat.

Today, I got re-inspired by the story below, not to compete, but to set a goal for my health, for the new decade I am about to embark into (6th decade) ! Thanks Ernestine, you have inspired one more person today by being an example of what is possible.

Some Things I Love About Tavala…

I am not a new comer to Network Marketing. I joined the industry when my kids were in grade school, as a way to create additional income and to save money on taxes by having a home based business. Now, today, in 2017, 25+ years later, I still enjoy the industry and encourage ‘those searching’, to find a company and product line that they are passionate about representing and partnering with.

Like most people who continue to purchase products over the years, I, too, am very loyal when it comes to purchasing products/services that I love, whether there is a financial gain or not. Over the years I have only joined a handful of companies, my former company I was with for 10+ years. Honestly looking back, several of the companies I did join were extremely short lived and only based on a friend hyping me that “I’d better get in now and secure a position and that I’d be at the top of his ‘pay leg’!!!! Yes, the fear of loss can be real in Network Marketing.

My advice is never fall for the hype or empty promises when deciding on your financial future and a network marketing company. Do your ‘due diligence’ and learn about the company’s corporate culture, their plans for the future and company growth, products, products coming, compensation plan, opportunity for growth. See if what they SAY is what you FEEL. Use your intuition and ask questions. I know Dave and I always love when people come to us and actually ‘interview us” as we would interview someone looking to partner with us as a leader. It is a 2-way street and hopefully a long term relationship that we are looking for.

In mid-December Dave and I joined Tavala. We resigned from 2 companies we had been affiliated with- walking away from 3 monthly checks. We knew in order to do what we are doing as leaders with TAVALA, that it was the authentic and highly integrity based thing to do. We have never looked back or regretted that decision. On the contrary!

Today we had conversations with 3 different new leaders on our team and it prompted me to create this brief video.

Leadership can be described as the process or art of influencing people’s behaviors, thoughts and attitude. Effective leadership makes people feel like they have a say in how things are done. Leadership entails inspiring people to effectively, efficiently and willingly complete any tasks assigned to them, often inadvertently leading to higher levels of productivity and job satisfaction.

How does it apply to Network Marketing?

A physician that I admire and trust, Dr. Deborah MD. sent me her February newsletter today and it included a topic that is forefront on many people’s minds….people of ALL AGES. This is her information on Sleep Loss and Brain Aging.

Customary is NOT the same optimal when it comes to sleep. Specifically, let’s talk about a commonly repeated disclaimer, “No, I don’t sleep so well, but, hey, people always sleep less as they get older.” The defense is repeated for good reason as it does seem to be true – the quality and duration of sleep both decline in many if not most people with aging, starting even in your 40’s, which to me sounds still very young! However, accepting shorter sleep because it’s common is not such a good idea.
Duke researchers (link is external) have identified the ways in which aging brains deteriorate when they have shortened sleep. Brain function was evaluated by in-person and MRI assessments every two years following 66 generally healthy Chinese adults, starting at the age of 55.

For every hour of lost sleep, the ventricles expanded and cognitive skills declined, compared to those who maintained a healthy sleep duration. The sleep-deprived brains looked more like the brain on the right in the picture: the brain with the large black (no-brain) spaces, now filled with fluid where there used to be brain, what is called “ventricular enlargement,” which really amounts to loss of brain tissue.
The pictures, by the way, should be labeled “Normal” on the left and “Alzheimer’s” on the right.
Need I say more? Figure out a way to prioritize sleep. If you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, there are gentle and health-promoting ways to enhance sleep.
