“My name is Carol, I’m 60 years young, and this is my Before to Beyond Story. . .
I have struggled with weight issues most of my life as so many people have. As a child I grew up in a Polish/Italian family in which loved to celebrate and eat these rich foods. My weight went up and down, up and down. Finally, during my high school years, my weight became healthier and stable. Even though I had some great fit years as an active musical theater performer during my college years, I always had to go beyond with exercise and weight training to keep fit.
After gaining over 80 pounds during my pregnancy in 1982-1983 the struggle became worse. Extreme life challenges entered, and stress was slowly becoming my lifelong enemy. To compensate, I would binge eat, gain weight, and then take on a “fad diet” and exercise at the gym to shed the weight gain. To add fuel to the fire, when we couldn’t afford to eat fresh food, we ate all those cheap pre-packaged high carb foods. What I didn’t know at the time was that I was hurting the internal functions of my body, which led to acquiring an underactive thyroid in my mid 30’s. At that point in my life I simply had to function as a divorced single mom without child support, forge ahead and work three jobs (one was a full time teaching job) to take care of my son and myself: adding more stress.
Now having added the thyroid complication, moving into my 40’s, and taking care of my mother who was sick and homebound, the pounds packed on once again and my scale topped over 250 pounds. I developed heel spurs and had to wear orthotic insoles in my shoes. I was in such pain. I was a mess! I was now in the pre-diabetic zone and miserable. After mom died, I was able to lose 80 pounds and was finally down to a size 8. That didn’t last too long as I got married soon after and we both had a lot of fun enjoying food, company and traveling to our favorite Disney locations. I began to follow a repetitive unhealthy pattern here: stress + weight gain + weight loss, repeat.
Fast forward to 2017, I was back up to 240 pounds and had to have my gall bladder removed. My surgeon told me I was a perfect candidate for gastric sleeve surgery, of which I had never considered. I went for it. That was the best medical decision I had made in my life thus far. My stomach had already been stretched from here to kingdom come. Something happened during the 6-month prep period: change of mindset. This surgery brought about a new mindset, a very small stomach with the size of a baby’s appetite, and an extreme weight and size loss down to a size 2! Never in my wildest dreams. I am no longer a pre-diabetic. I was happy and stable until…the Covid-19 Pandemic hit. I contracted Covid-19 for my 59th birthday and packed on about 15 pounds. Five months later I had my right hip replaced and pack on another 10-15 pounds. Here we go again…and then I was introduced to ZipSlim by my friend and coach Laura Spaugh.
